One Of You For Me

Holly Throsby
One Of You For Me

6 Track, LP (2007, Spunk!)
Related: Holly Throsby.

Essentially a showcase for a fabulous new song, the eponymous One Of You For Me EP shows Holly Throsby embracing a wider palette of sounds from her usual spare acoustic mode. A perky, jazz-tinged, harmony-layered, strings, brass ‘n’ piano-laced, percussion-quirky pop gem, ‘One of You For Me’ is very different from anything Throsby has done so far, not least as she gets beyond her usual vocal mannerisms and the whole thing just feels fresh and vibrant. Bravo.

Elsewhere, two cover versions are offered. Certain types of indie boys might have to have a little lie down just imagining the combination of Throsby with Sarah Blasko (vocals/melodica) on ‘By This River’ (Brian Eno, Before and After Science). It is lovely. Throsby then tackles ‘Three Questions’ (Bonnie Prince Billy, Master and Everyone), throws in an acoustic demo of a new song and live versions of two old favourites. All good (as we already know), but I for one am hankering for more of the new, upbeat stuff.
