There’s some graffiti on the inside of a toilet door at the Hopetoun Hotel which reads, “Van She must die. Real music has nothing to do with pouting.” Young and Restless’ raven-haired firecracker of a frontwoman, Karina Utomo, spends more time throwing her whippet frame and impressive banshee howl of a voice around stage than pouting, but it’s likely the frighteningly earnest writer of said graffiti would have a similarly dim view of this five-piece; their self-titled debut is not so much a triumph of style over substance as a demonstration of what happens when the balance between the two is skewed towards the former.
Originally hailing from Australia's least rock city, Canberra, they’ve since ridden a wave of hype to the more agreeable Melbourne, with singles like the screamy, speed-riffing ‘Satan’ and the brilliantly titled ‘I Pointed At You and You Burst Into Flames’ underlining their ability to grab your attention – as well as their inability to keep it. Only the slightly mellower ‘Here It Comes… (Lungs)’ departs even slightly from the formula of pogo-friendly riffs, a screamy bit and a repetitive, throwaway refrain. Reference points are easy to come by but the comparisons prove unflattering: they’re The Grates without the pop sensibility or The Blood Brothers without the inventiveness.
