Released concurrently with a noisier sibling (Roky’s Room), Beast was envisaged as the more song-based of the two Magic Dirt releases, but is a long way from the relatively feather-light pop of ‘All My Crushes’ or ‘Dirty Jeans’. If the latter single saw vocalist Adalita not having washed her jeans “for three months or more”, here she’s been sitting in the same puddle of vomit and bourbon for weeks, nursing a killer headache and listening to wall-shaking primitive rock.
These are songs which have been stripped down to corrosive metal skeletons and spat out with real venom. Some don’t bother progressing to a second chord. ‘Bring Me The Head Of…’ crackles with pent-up violence, while ‘Don't Panic’ shudders from a Patti Smith-aping spoken word rant into a reassuring chorus. Overall this is the rawest the Dirt have sounded in years. Tellingly the most used phrase in the press release is “fuck off”. Those merely after hummable tunes or pleasant background music will want to do just that.
