Could it be that the ‘80s electro pop revival has matured, habituated, and finally, entered the subconscious? The Cops’ Simon Carter counts Roxy Music, David Bowie and other such pillars of ’70s angularity as influences in the writing and production of Drop it in Their Laps, but the final product sounds more like a child of the subsequent decade. It’s as if The Cops are themselves living through the ‘80s, and employ the era’s stylistic attributes through necessity rather than affectation.

If nothing else, the opening ‘Out of the Fridge/Into the Fire’ sounds like the culmination of over five years of ‘80s imitation, combining over-laden synthesizers, disco beats and overt vocal sexuality (both lyrically and tonally) as naturally, if not as dexterously, as Bronski Beat and A Flock of Seagulls. Such is this hall of mirrors, that sounding like early Human League isn’t necessarily a conscious pursuit anymore. But like The Presets and Van She, The Cops seem almost reluctant in the breadth of their ‘80s fascination, and Drop it in Their Laps rarely leaves the dance floor. It is a relentless album, finding the light of the ‘80s but ignoring the shade. But then, perhaps the power ballads are best left to Tears for Fears.
