When Batrider finally launched their debut Australian EP, ‘They Said You’re Hideous’, at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club earlier this year, it was clear the band had grown tired of the disc’s well-worn material. After all, the EP was released in New Zealand over two years ago, and by the time Batrider finally found the time and money for its rebirth, they had, in many ways, moved on. The Wellington émigrés seemed keen to linger on the newer songs, and pass dutifully through the older ones. Hence, the hasty arrival of ‘Take Me Back’. While consistent with ‘They Said You’re Hideous’ in terms of its visceral vocal drawl, dense guitar distortion and almost tribal rhythm section interplay, ‘Take Me Back’ presents a significant departure in terms of the band’s maturity and rock sensibility. Much like The Drones, Batrider possess the patience and care to carve strangely beautiful melodies from discordant lumber and, especially on ‘Dad’, to understand that being a ‘loud band’ involves being quiet a great deal of the time. It is a contrast at which Batrider have always excelled, and here’s hoping a more extended study is on its way.
