The Valentinos first EP drew many to worship at its alter, lured by some strange and unexplainable charisma bursting out of those omnipresent little white headphones. Something appeared to be in motion and the converted waited for the next instalment. As the drums fire their opening salvo on Damn And Damn Again it appears we’re in for more of the same, but somewhere around the chorus of “Face Is On The Wall,” there’s a sinking feeling. The five songs presented here lack vitality. In trying to expand their audience, the band has watered down their sound. While Kim Moyes production on the debut captured and enhanced the band’s nervous energy, Nick Littlemore manages to smear the songs in a pop Vaseline that erases the friction so vital to The Valentino’s sound.
