Opener ‘The Black Tide’ sucks you down the rabbit hole into a strange subterranean lair and the following 12 tracks form the perfect soundtrack to wandering through a maze of dark tunnels, synthesizing that unique mix of adrenaline and nerves that comes from the feeling you’re being followed by something in the shadows. Snowman’s music has a strong cinematic quality, their bastard brand of neo-surf rock seemingly influenced by late night horror maestros like Dario Argento and John Carpenter. The other element that creeps in on several songs, most noticeably ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ is Ennio Morricone’s western soundtracks – albeit a Morricone in make-up and false vampire teeth. The production is reverb-heavy but it complements the yells and falsettos, lending them an eerie, unsettling quality. Snowman exude a confidence in their sound that borders on arrogant, the twin vocals slithering between soft spoken verses and explosive choruses, as all sorts of musical mayhem breaks loose around them.
