Somehow Adelaide breeds a unique blend of genre smarts and isolation-inspired innovation – all things that I would have previously applied to the city of churches’ Wolf and Cub. For their debut long player, Vessels, it seems they’ve dropped the innovation by the wayside and instead embraced virtuosity as their new yardstick – and while I’m usually a cynic when it comes to having a ‘by numbers’ approach to anything, this record seems better for it. Taking psych-rock as their cue, Wolf and Cub create a world in stereo, displacing the listener, mastering the epic and practicing conciseness simultaneously. It’s a combination that’s rarely achieved in any derivation of rock, and never with this much elegance. For once, a record worthy of the hype.
