7 Track, LP (2006, Plus One Records)

Fervent fans will be a smidge let down to discover that the latest offering from Giants Of Science is a mere 8-tracks of OK songs written by other people. That’s right; it’s a consignment of covers. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not against a band belting out a speed-metal version of ‘I Did It My Way’ at stumps, but why a whole record of the little suckers from a band that has built its fan base on rockin’ a little differently from the rest? I had expected a little more than a cut-n-paste sampler. I can’t fault the musicianship, multi-layered harmonies and the delivery of the songs — particularly the punk ‘n’ blues remix of Annie Lennox’s ‘Sisters’. However, straight-up covers tend to lack the emotion and guts of original songs that artists have toiled over. If you’re going down this road, then a Kate Bush doom-metal mash-up wouldn’t go astray.
