Mark Gomes (ex-Lovepack) has dropped a bewitching debut album — in a perfect world the sleeve would be bound in leather and lace with Gomes personally delivering each copy. This precious document is woven with care, decorated with buzzing tones and sustained pitches that gather, warm and raw, ‘round syncopated, shifting drum hops. Gomes reflects upon love, base desires and disillusionment, chanting out elemental poetry like little incantations from the pits of his gut and heart. Sounds of water on tracks like the transcendental ‘Cankers In Skillet’ and ‘No Away Out’ are balanced with themes such as fighting fire with fire on ‘Projection Of Defeat’. Fittingly, the album’s ethereal highlight ‘Marceline’ is a heartbreaking meditation on impermanence and returning to the earth. If you consider yourself an aficionado of twenty-first century electronic pop and don’t own this album, you’re kidding yourself. A chronicle of order and disorder for a golden dawn.
