Sydney improv trio Triosk are elemental jazz instrumentalists who forgo the safety of traditional jams in favour of digitally chopping, splicing and processing their world-class workouts. Not surprising really, considering they’re chummy with clicks ‘n’ cuts mastermind Jan Jelinek. Adrian Klumpes is king of the keys – he plays inquisitively, flirting with intervals and coaxing fractured melodies into springing forth clean from dissonant clusters. On the album’s centerpiece, ‘Lazyboat’, Klumpes sprinkles ice-cold piano phrases over deadened low-end ambiences. These decorative notes and graceful motifs evolve into resonant digital pops before the composition unravels, laying naked the ghost tones and dusty sonic artifacts at the piece’s core. Throughout the album stick clicks and ride rushes are ever scuttling, reduced to rapid-fire flutters of sequenced metal and wood. Drones are clothed in raw hiss textures. Triosk’s playful attitude towards harmonic and percussive patterns ensures that despite the fact that this is essentially electronically retouched jazz, human spontaneity is not lacking. They’re three albums in and remaining fresh.
