A recent guestbook post on Gersey’s website venerates that, “You guys are bloody tops, not as grouse as The Choirboys, but pretty close.” It is hard to know whether Gersey has ever aspired to the anthemic heights of ‘Run To Paradise’ or ‘Boys Will Be Boys’, but No Satellites captures a band similarly partial to the trappings of grandiose production and reverb-driven gravitas. The dynamic variety of 2002’s Storms Dressed As Stars served to balance those inclinations with understated and clearly cooperative songwriting, but such poise is smothered by the hurried, dense mood of No Satellites. From the opening ‘I’m Still Here’ to the closing breaths of ‘Search Lights’, No Satellites is an album threaded with over-emphasised guitars and relentless keyboards. ‘Fourteen Shades’ and ‘Remains’ offer some clarity, while Dean Turner’s production is well-suited to ‘This Girl Is My Gun’, but to the detriment of otherwise well-composed songs, Gersey have submitted to the lure of studio efficacy, letting good ideas drift away.
