Like the Tortoise in Aesop’s enduring fable, Sodastream have won the race slowly but surely. Few other Australian bands are so self-contained, so confident in their own sonic universe. Reservations sounds most immediately like 2001’s The Hill for Company, with an emphasis on stark, simple arrangements buoyed along by clear piano, Pete Cohen’s molasses-thick double bass, and Karl Smith’s emotive singing. After the bells-and-whistles detour of 2003’s A Minor Revival, Sodastream have returned to their foundations with the sure knowledge that such stripped, melancholy territory belongs wholly to them. Smith is a lyric writer who knows the virtues of restraint. He gives you just enough information to draw you in to a song, but never entirely reveals his hand. The two most outstanding tracks here, ‘Tickets to the Fight’ and ‘Firelines’, hum with palpable dramatic tension. Whether set yesterday, or a hundred years ago, these stories grab your heart.
