SubAudible Hum’s 2005 debut, Everything You Heard Is True, was a derivative but exhilarating concoction of dark, British-inspired melodrama; a child born from the angst of ‘Exit Music (For A Film)’, expressing itself through the grandeur art-rock of Muse. Sadly, it slipped beneath the radar despite critical acclaim from the likes of Triple J’s Robbie Buck and several street press critics. ‘Sugarcoat’ is SubAudible Hum’s latest track, distributed online through Apple’s iTunes music store. It serves as an adequate introduction to the band’s trademark sounds, but fails to match the visceral thrill of cuts like ‘Blood In The Ointment’ which spiral into breath-taking malevolence. Instead, ‘Sugarcoat’ is a slice of dark, sing-a-long rock, more suited to a solid album track than a single. There is something to ponder, however: Could iTunes become a viable alternative to the trusty 7” as a means of releasing local indie singles?
