Ned Collette + Wirewalker
The Pool is Full of Hats/Come On Let's Go
2 Track, Newsletter (2010, Dot Dash)
Related: Ned Collette.
Despite its Dada-esque title, 'The Pool is Full of Hats' is quite a simple little tune. A gradually building synthetic beat, ancient-sounding keyboards and subtle acoustic guitar provide a non-intrusive vehicle for Collette's always-affecting vocals. There's an understated melancholy to his words as well as his delivery on this track, a pained combination of longing and acceptance. It's all very mellow, and yet doesn't risk sinking into blandness, even after repeated listens.
'Come on Let's Go' is a cover of a Broadcast song, transcribing their muted electronica into a full-band arrangement. Much bolder than either the original or this single's A-side, it highlights the talent Collette has hooked up with in his Wirewalker bandmates, as well as his own ability to infuse every syllable that escapes his mouth with emotion and Australian intonations, which we can only hope doesn't rub off once he relocates to Berlin this year.
