Otouto are masterfully coy; toying around with the idea of being a pop band just as they withdraw that promise and throw an “art” prefix to the genre, be it through their stop-start arrangements, Kishore Ryan’s circular drumming or singer Hazel Brown’s intentional lyrical confusion. The result, clear on new single ‘Astronauts’, is pleasingly aloof. Otouto keep it interesting without having to stress their point.

Brown’s breathy vocals are in the realm of Chan Marshall and Khaela Maricich, able to sound both plain and refined. They are given added texture by the subtle, decorative backing harmonies provided by her sister Martha. Other light melodic ornaments softly accentuate the vocal layering and skittered drums, but the band’s strength is in keeping a leash on it all. This slightness is the song’s main attraction. It’s poised like it might just zip into thin air any moment – even if you have trouble getting it out of your head after it does.
