Trans-state collaborative duo Collarbones – Sydney’s Marcus Whale and Adelaide’s Travis Cook – already showed promise as a cut-up electronica project with last year’s freely available Waiting for the Ghosts EP, and now they’ve cemented that claim. Cut from an album due in late 2010, ‘Kill Off The Vowels’ sees the pair hone their talent for building songs out of snatched, hacked-off segments of other tracks and sounds, further sharpening their unique aesthetic with a new ability to generate tension.

Clipped from some distant sample of a sample, the thick, bass-heavy synth that structures this track is given an almost dubstep feel via some odd slicing – cut halfway between two dissimilar sections – and its constant repetition. One can sense Collarbones’ growing dissatisfaction with easy harmonic progression, as they force the loop to decompose into crystalline shards. The only thing giving ‘Kill Off The Vowels’ a kind of musical narrative is Whale’s characteristically layered, treated voice. It’s an intriguing creature, moving from jazzy stuttered verses to increasingly layered harmonies for the chorus.

Collarbones sure have a knack for making beautiful little monuments out of the otherwise transient noises that crisscross the ether.

fun times everyone - though melbourne wins in the 'getting down' stakes.

Sure Was.

Who were you, jimm?

Just a nondescript guy in the audience. Was dancing a bunch but not enough to beat the melbourne dance squad it seems. We'll out-dance you next time!
