It’s always summer in the Blue Mountains – or so it seems. While the rest of the country steps in fits and starts out of winter, Blue Mountains exports Cloud Control punch straight for the drunken euphoria of a lazy summer evening with their new single ‘Gold Canary’.
The song starts with the drone of a single kick drum and the kind of kitschy Afrobeat choral appropriation that’s normally best left to anyone with “Kuti” in their surname. And yet somehow – bypassed sneakily via some Fleet Foxes vocal inspiration, accompanied by a surging, molasses-thick bass line; a simian, so-simple kick and snare; and the sweetest, most effortlessly charming guitar melody – it becomes exactly what Vampire Weekend failed to achieve. It’s alternately thrilling and new in its bricolage of simple, disparate elements from diverse sources.
By the time singers Alister Wright and Heidi Lenffer start to chant the title repeatedly from three minutes in, the drums break free and the guitars seemingly stumble over the slightest, simple variant of their melody, elevating the song into the stratosphere. It’s not just the sound of a band finding their feet but a band striding forth assuredly in 3.56 of brilliant summer sun. ‘Gold Canary’ quickly assumes its place as one of the best Australian singles of the year.
