‘Delicate’ is a co-write between Angie Hart and The Crayon Fields’ Geoff O’Connor, two artists equally obsessed with decoding the mysteries of love. But while O’Connor is so often the keen observer – taking notes on quarrelling couples or spying on an unattainable crush from afar – Hart deconstructs relationships from within. “It’s a delicate thing we make/But it’s not a house of cards,” she sings, tenderly, over acoustic guitar so stark you can hear the rattle of flesh on string. “Rearranging furniture/Won’t make the lights go out.” You don’t sing lyrics like this unless you’ve lived every line – every gut-wrenching break-up, every 3am fight. And while Hart may poke fun at her heart-on-sleeve aesthetic in the press materials that accompany this release – “I never intend to write so openly … because it’s painful,” she says – it’s precisely this pain that makes ‘Delicate’ as real and as acute and as sadly beautiful as a love song can get.
