A snappy drumroll introduces ‘Animation In My Head’ and The Scribs are off to a flying start. This is the idiosyncratic Melbourne duo’s first proper release after five years of sporadic gigs and a self-released demo EP.

Flying Scribble aren’t your ordinary garden-variety indie band. Multi-instrumentalists Gray Taylor and Louise Terry enjoy pushing themselves musically and physically. In a live situation this results in a flurry of activity that sees Taylor multi-tasking on drums and electronics, while Terry pulls out all the stops on her vintage keyboard, laying down complex rhythms and melodies while playing bass notes with her feet like a church organist. On top of that, the two women layer soaring lead and harmony vocals.

Lifted from the forthcoming album We’re A Chameleon, the single was mixed by Cornel Wilczek (aka Qua) who makes sure all the intricacies of the music are preserved and presented in crystalline focus, distilled into 2.14 minutes of heavenly pop.

crazy. these wonderful ladies pulled up alongside me in Christchurch today for directions - they're driving to wellington for a gig in a couple of nights - and handed me a CD. really cool peoples, crazy pop melodies. i hope they do well and if you're reading this at some stage thanks for the CD!!!!

I had no idea who these guys were when we supported them at their single launch, but I was convinced to stick around despite operating on very little sleep.

Really glad I did, absolutely wonderful stuff. They got the presentation bang on, too - occupying opposite corners of the stage, projected animations in the middle.
