Narco goth? Narco as in narcolepsy. Goth as in Bauhaus. ‘Antler’ lumbers along to steady and morose drum beat, almost tottering over before Liam Andrew’s bleak vocals drift in to make your dreary heart that little lonelier and misunderstood.
You can picture Ian Curtis stamping his feet to the plodding drums and repetitive chant: “In a formal extract.” There is no video to this song but I imagine it would include a close-up of an eagle’s eye as it flies through the night sky. Not sure how you would handle the lighting on something like that, but it seems appropriate to the eerie feel of the song. ‘Antler’ was recorded by Mikey Young (ECSR, Ooga Boogas) in the basement of Melbourne streetpress Inpress, which apparently used to be an old cocoa mill. While noticeably slower, it continues My Disco’s foray into the dark but clean, minimalist post-punk found on 2008’s Paradise.
This release is the fourth and final installment of a series of split 7”s devised by Louisville, Kentucky three-piece Young Widows. Other splits have featured Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Melt-Banana and Pelican. Each release is limited and the artwork for the four singles fit together to form one large puzzle. Not to ruin the surprise or anything, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s probably going to be a skull of some kind.
