Under thick blankets of sound, a deceptively simple, throbbing bass line defines ‘Forever’, the new single from Melbourne’s Love of Diagrams. As for the vocal hooks, they’re big enough to hang a Mark Rothko exhibition from. The abstract expressionist’s work is indeed an apt visual analogy for the trio’s new direction with its ethereal yet bold layers of washed-out colour.

In their early days, Love of Diagrams were all about shifting dynamics between instrumental sections and individual instruments. And while they’ve embraced a more linear pop sound on ‘Forever’, they haven’t sacrificed the intricacy they’re renowned for. Monika Fikerle’s drums sit lower in the mix than on previous outings, but still provide sturdiness with her insistent signature style, while Luke Horton layers some lovely guitar textures that exhibit some quasi-psychedelic flourishes. His warm guitar fuzz and the way in which his hazy vocals merge with those of bassist Antonia Sellbach, recalls the early work of British shoegazers Ride, Swervedriver and other luminaries from Creation Records circa early ’90s.

‘Forever’ is simultaneously urgent and laid-back, which is quite a feat to pull off.
