It’s been a while between proverbial drinks for Sydney’s Decoder Ring. Four years have passed since their third full-length Fractions introduced them to a much wider audience, during which the group have been slowly but surely working on a follow-up. The fruit of those labours is They Bind The Stars, And The Wild Team, of which our first taste comes in the form of ‘Let A Thousand Flowers Bloom’. Underneath a soaring post-krautrock veneer of ever-loudening chords lies a surprisingly catchy pop hook, cushioned by beds of sci-fi keyboards and given flight by a dynamically propulsive beat. If this is anything to go by, They Bind The Stars, And The Wild Team could well be the best collection of songs Decoder Ring have committed to tape (or hard disc, as it were). Time will tell.
