Aleks And The Ramps are a lot of things. Twee-prog, haphazard indie rock, experimental pop, but AM country-rock? On one of several breakdowns on ‘Circa 1992 Ideas’ – one of the best cuts on their new LP Midnight Believer – Simon Connolly and Joe Foley duke it out America-style over groovy percussion and warm harmonies. That it evokes ‘Ventura Highway’ shouldn’t be much of a surprise to those familiar with country-ish side project Potential Falcon (Connolly, Foley, Huw Murdoch of Plastic Palace Alice and “two nice guys” named Donovan and Hugh). Then again, those expecting The Ramps’ wild experimentation would be disappointed here. Still, it’d be unfair to dismiss a track like ‘On The Road (Pt 1) as an easy rocker (to use the words of the late great Jay Bennett). While it’s not hard to pick The Posies in the verses, it all comes together with an out-of-nowhere chorus that’d be jarring if it didn’t make perfect sense. Crashing drums, soaring BVs, guitars that jangle as much as they punch – bring on part two.
