After seven years as one half of the country’s finest folk-pop duo, it’s certainly a change hearing Sodastream’s Karl Smith cutting loose in full band mode. ‘Berlin’ is the first single from his new outfit Lee Memorial, a “supergroup” featuring members of Ninety Nine, the Nation Blue, Zond and Paradise Motel.

‘Berlin’ is all about the interplay between Smith and Ninety Nine’s Laura MacFarlane, whose voices go together like Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise/Sunset. No surprises then that the track is a wistful sort of holiday romance in the Linklater vein; a song about love and longing (“I wish that you were with me/When I wasn’t strong”) set amid the “streets of Berlin”.

Debut album, The Lives of Lee Memorial, will be out through Dot Dash on March 28.
