Another treacle trickles from this hard to hunt down Melbourne band, who will be releasing a double album – well, two separate albums put together (think Deerhunter’s Microcastle/*Weird Era Cont.*) – called Easy/*House Music* in late April. Mum Smokes are like a fairy in the bottom of the garden, making truly sublime and inexplicable music beamed from another world. It’s almost creepy, and that’s not helped by the shafts of horror guitar that start off this number. Before long though it settles into a smooth ska pace, as Julian Patterson’s vocals waft over the rest of the band’s crazed-children’s-choir “yah yahs”. Things like this just aren’t meant to fit so perfect or sound so beautiful. But there’s a groove in the rush and whimsy written on the gravestone.
