No one does high-school awkwardness quite like Geoff O’Connor from Crayon Fields. “I look at you/ And suddenly I’m a virgin in a dance hall.” You can’t write lines like that unless you’ve been on the wrong end of a crush that’s unrequited. I love how this track unfolds like a John Hughes narrative. Heartache, longing, geeky triumph; it’s all here, drenched in reverb and dressed in the kind of production that’d be nostalgic if you were a teen in the ’60s. What’s more you can go-go dance, or shuffle your feet to it thanks to punchy palm-muted guitar, tambourine and wood block hits.

A teaser for Crayon Fields’ next album (due out in 2009), ‘Mirror Ball’ is backed by ‘How Loved You Are’, a punchy pop afterthought that wouldn’t sound out of place on the last Vampire Weekend record.

A tantalising taste of things to come.
