In the vein of ‘Damage’ from 2001’s Dress Me Slowly, ‘Dilettantes’ – the title-track from You Am I’s forthcoming LP – is another single straight outta left field by the Melbourne/Sydney veterans. An experimental grower that never really gets out of first gear, ‘Dilettantes’ is awash with backwards guitars, handclaps, lush strings and a contemplative lyric from Rogers: “If I could never see you in the light/ What chance have I of finding you in shadows.” It’s the kind of song that would sound great in context, but as a standalone single it’s a wee bit beige. That being said, no one can accuse them of resting on their (pretty awesome) laurels.
