Tingling Cheeks Are Love: A Sensory Projects Compilation
33 Track, Comp LPs (2008, Sensory Projects)
Related: City City City, The Tigers, The Sand Pebbles.
Melbourne label Sensory Projects is 50-releases old – 55, actually – and by way of celebration, they’ve released Tingling Cheeks are Love, a two-disc, 33-track compilation of new, old and in-between songs from the ranks of their extended family.
These CDs hold many gems. Among those that you may have heard before: the Battles-esque ‘Year In’ from City City City’s Dawn + The Blue Light District; The Tigers’ ‘Heart Horse’, a slow-burner off last year’s criminally underrated Beautiful Forest; the uneven tempos of ‘Talk-a-phobic’ from the always excellent Disaster Plan; and ‘Did They Speak’ by Object, a project of Brisbane sound artist Lawrence English. A couple of the label’s forthcoming releases get a look in too, such as The Sun Blindness’s Like Pearly Clouds, Children of the Wave’s Carapace, and Let The Darkness at You, the debut from Pretty Boy Crossover member Jason Sweeney’s solo project Panoptique Electrical (with a song that was kind enough to lend its name to this collection).
But perhaps more importantly, tucked in among these tracks (and many more besides) is a clutch of previously unreleased tunes, including the low-key clicks and hums of Pretty Boy Crossover’s ‘In Rectangles’, the fractured breakbeats of ‘Filch’ from reclusive Melbourne entity Terminal Sound System, as well as The Sand Pebbles’ unique take on Nico’s ‘Frozen Warnings’.
By nature, this is an eclectic compilation, with sounds ranging from rickety indie rock and swirling neo-psych to glitch and drone. But it’s nonetheless an impressive set of tunes, whether as a Cliffs Notes introduction to the consistently interesting output of Sensory Projects or as a ready-made car tape.
