Buy-A-Brick Scheme To Save Sydney’s Annandale

Comment I Made about 1 month ago

I agree wholeheartedly flukazoid - you cannot blame punters for not showing up, that argument doesn't work for me either.

Kids these days don't want to pay for music .. so maybe there's a flow on effect there to seeing local live music... plus their budget is eaten up seeing Foo Fighters and the latest 90's reunion show... but i can't blame people for not wanting to shell out $15 for 5 bands they've never heard of that have nothing in common musically... you can't build a music scene or venue by doing that.

Its a complicated situation all round - with no easy answers.

Flukazoid - not saying those pubs changed from live music as they were failing as venues .. just saying that running a venue primarily based on live music isn't demeed the most profitible way to go in Sydney these days. But i do see your and Kit's point that in the case of the X the new owners had their own agenda unrelated to live music, and that pub was successful up until the end.

My main point wasn't to refute the argument about the bookings at the Annandale - i haven't seen many bands there over the past few years either. Just saying that if there were more bands able to get 300 payers every night of the week then the pubs wouldn't be in such a bad position. From there i'm just asking if its the lack of bands, lack of punters or a bigger cultural shift in Sydney generally.

I think the location of the venue is a moot point ... back in the venue's hey-day when the place was always packed that didn't seem to be a problem. And lets be honest - The Annandale Hotel in Surry Hills would be a bit ridiculous ... i think the location is a variable that isn't gonna change anytime soon, so if thats what is holding the place back then they might as well sell it now.

I don't subscribe to the blame the booker argument either - i think you need to look further than that. The Sydney music scene has changed immeasurably in the last 5 to 10 years ... there just doesn't seem to be the numbers of people who go see bands as their main form of entertainment... Maybe the problem is that from the ground level the Sydney music scene is floundering ?

If it wasn't then the Hoey would have been packed all week and they could have made enough money to upgrade the place. The Excelsior wouldn't have been changed to a restaurant after 10 minutes after it was sold.

Long story short - apart from a niche indie market - there just aren't the numbers to sustain as many pubs who make live music their primary source of income and clientele.

BAM!: ‘We Don’t Want To Rip Off Bands’

I guess hating people who like ''all kinds of music'' is extreme ... but they usually don't mean it in my experience... but good luck to BAM, maybe the cool venue/camping vibe will outweigh the fact that the selling point is musical variety.

If Bob Marley was in Faith No More they could have played this festival and covered nearly all the bases .. the ultimate RIRHHMAB artist.

First mistake they've made is listing the genre's along the top of the poster ... including indie. I rue the day that became a genre ...

Listing the genres is the equivalent of when you ask someone what they like musically and they say ''everything''. Who doesn't hate those people ??
