You know a country is in real dire straits when it's not the politicians who reflect it – it's Werner Herzog.

Just thinking about the ramifications including the end of European law as we know which has pissed me off for ages and I just read this, well done UK, getting the knives out already...

Britain's employers will get US-style labour laws (no unfair dismissal provisions, no mandatory annual leave, healthcare tied to employment, a hugely profitable race to the bottom in working conditions). But it's OK, the little people will get public executions of paedophiles on Sky TV (membership of the EU prohibits capital punishment, which polls show that >50% of Britons want to see reintroduced).

Anyway, I'm hoping that Britain is still in the new, reduced EU. It'd suck if the Pommie passport I stand to get after 8+ years here wouldn't theoretically let me up sticks and move to, say, Berlin or Copenhagen or somewhere should I want to.

It's a theological issue. The War On Drugs is an article of faith of Greater America (of which Australia is part), as is the distinction between evil drugs (marijuana, cocaine, MDMA, LSD) and non-evil drugs (alcohol and tobacco), which has no basis in any rational assessment of harm or addiction but is pure theology.

Perhaps it's time to petition the Guardian to set up an Australian edition (in the way they have a web-based US edition).
