Our first proper review!!!
Reading that the Teleflorists were “three good friends who share a mutual disdain for the epic amounts of blandness and unoriginality in music today”, it was evident the listen would be something a long way from mainstream. Various labels float about – ‘Post-Punk’, ‘Garage’, ‘Noise’,‘Post-All’ – but only the ears tell the truth.
Over five tracks, the three Glastonbury lads carve anauditory wasteland of their own, while marching sideby-side with their declared influences, the most obvious of which is Sonic Youth.
‘Our Trismos’ fires things up in filthy style, scratchy guitars painting a hypnotic canvass for the sparse, plaintive vocals to colour. Its minimalist aspirations pave the way for ‘PharmakonWells’, a virtually-one-note affair, that ups the ante, before collapsing under the weight of trashy drums and shrieking axes.‘Eight Lines’ dials up a more Radiohead vibe, with a delicate, falsetto vocal that’s charged down by a detached slide guitar lurking on the finish line.
The latter two numbers,‘(i) Irreverent’ and ‘Serial’ are live cuts, both ambient noise-fests built from openchord Hell, and ringing, spring reverbs.Teleflorists have made clear their agenda, a stoned mesmerism and rusty tonal depth that matters more than the traditional sense of structure or aesthetic appeal. And boy, does it clear the palate.
Joking aside, the film's pretty good.
Summer Heights High is a very funny program.
