Like the smug progressive whose lefty Christmases have all come at once, in the form of a fellow old boy doing state Liberal's dirty work; putting train safety leaflets in the faces of the passing commuters, as they shuffle blindly towards Parliament station. Your father might be powerful and incomprehensively wealthy, but you're 29 and you still live with him, and you're the political equivalent of that bloke in Bourke street mall wearing a sandwich board. May your jocks prove cruelly uncomfortable in your suffering.

'Agent provocateur' is entirely the wrong phrase. 'Catalyst' would suffice.

well yes Peter, they were. The Germanic tribes were never successfully obliterated by Rome and eventually took Rome and effectively ended the empire. check into all that Teutonic mythology stuff..
Nah, these tribes were at best an agent provocateur for the fall an empire already overextended, weakened by famine and political instability, strapped for cash and grossly mismanaged, and stricken by a plague which reduced the ranks of its (territorially divided) military by up to 50%. And you also have to realise that Roman armies during this period included substantial numbers of 'Goths', either enlisted or under the control of 'loyal' Germanic chieftans. The Germanic peoples never established an enduring culture or empire of their own in the lands they removed from Roman control. They were opportunists, pushed from above by superior warriors and driven by their adoration for Roman myths and heroism to destroy exactly what they craved for themselves.
Far from a superpower.
