SPOONBILL with Morph and Domino Theory
Sat 2 Feb
Doors 8.30
Propelled by the massive response from local and international audiences, and the successful release of his debut album ‘Megafauna’, Melbourne-based electronic producer Spoonbill lays his anticipated second album: ‘Nestegg’. Spoonbill’s latest release is both cerebral sonic entertainment and smoothly-beaten groove, coming together as a heavily edited fusion of live recorded instrumentation and fabricated electronica. Onstage, Spoonbill crafts an elegant and quirky symphony of honey-scented grooves, jovial humour and joyous beat trickery, melding an ever-evolving array of styles into a distinctive Aussie blend.

VULGARGRAD (two sets) with Made For Chickens By Robots
Wed 6 Feb
Doors 8.30
VulgarGrad bring you the old songs of the Russian thieves (called blatnie pesny or blatnyak), along with punk classics of the Perestroika era and a strong dose of contemporary St. Petersburg swearing ska. The band delivers this music with style, raucous menace, stripy shirts and a smattering of grim smiles (very important). Legend of stage and screen, Jacek Koman (Children of Men, Moulin Rouge) is the genial but vengeful frontman who roars with the voice of a man betrayed, and he is backed by a gang of Australia's most illustrious ex-cons drawn from bands such as The Ennio Morricone Experience, Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, Zulya and the Children of the Underground, Croque Monsieur, Blue Drag, and the Five Angry Men.

JUSTIN GROUNDS (album launch) with Osh 10
Thu 7 Feb
Doors 8.00
Justin Grounds releases his new record, 'Love is Strong as Death'. An English multi-instrumentalist and singer, his music creates a timeless, mystical quality, and so unsurprisingly he has been compared to the likes of Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley. However, Justin’s wildly eclectic musical roots, ranging from classical to drum 'n' bass, set him in his own category. His new album fuses a somewhat unorthodox use of instrumentation together with his love of experimenting with new technology.

THE RENDERERS (NZ) with INTO THE VOID (NZ) and A Town In The City
Thu 14 Feb
Doors 8.00
The Renderers (Flying Nun, Ajax, Siltbreeze) bring their uncommonly dark and frazzled version of alt-something to Melbourne. Featuring Maryrose Crook's haunted melodic vocals, and Brian Crook's buzz bomb guitar, the band are now recording their fifth album to follow the underground classic ‘A Dream of the Sea’ (title track covered by Bonnie Prince Billy). Into the Void are the carnage that would result if Black Sabbath did hit ‘n’ run on Sonic Youth: a crazed mix of alt, noise, and metal, this band lurches and thunders with humour and originality.

Doors 8.30
One of Australia's most highly acclaimed singer/songwriters, Richard Easton launches his brand new album, ‘The Firing Range’. With four albums under his belt Easton has always been somewhat an underground artist, flying under the radar of the Australian music scene. It was his 2004 epic release ‘Two Thousand Demolition Songs’ and the single ‘Evil One’ which was picked up by Triple J that saw Richard Easton begin to emerge as an accessible songwriter and performer. The new album is a natural progression that will surely further Easton's notoriety.

CROQUE MONSIEUR with special guest
Wed 20 Feb
Doors 8.00
Croque Monsieur are a Melbourne-based band that began eight years ago with the express purpose of playing festive Eastern European music on the streets of Melbourne. Since those early days, Croque Monsieur’s original and adapted compositions have slowly developed to include other genres such as tango, Dixieland swing, calypso, 1960s film scores, mariachi and various other excursions into festive musics of the world. The ultimate result of this long journey into foreign sounds is a unique musicality that would make a Bulgarian think their national folk song is Mexican and vice versa.

WHITLEY with Skipping Girl Vinegar and Seagull
Wed 5 Mar
Doors 8.00
Melbourne artist Whitley is a contradiction. The cheeky, charismatic 22-year-old exudes charm with his boyish good looks and quick wit. Yet his music and lyrics belie an older soul, one with tales to tell. He’s new release, ‘The Submarine’ came to life in the bathrooms and bedrooms of his house. It is this organic approach that results in the songs creating an intimacy that invites you in to join in his happiness and heartbreak. The recording process revolved entirely around the Geelong footy fixture and the surfing tides before being mixed by Jonathan Burnside [The Sleepy Jackson, Nirvana, Faith No More, Fugazi].

FUTURE OF THE LEFT (UK) with special guests – SELLING FAST!
Thu 6 Mar
Doors 8.00
It is neither good nor healthy to go through the bones of the past, but unfortunately we must. Future of the Left are comprised of two thirds of the now defunct Mclusky, & one fifth of Jarcrew. ‘Curses’ is their first album. Fourteen pocket-sized acidic incantations that trip off the tongue & scatter all manner of charms, jinxes & hexes. Their sound is filled with guitars that jerk & spark like cattle prods, basslines that feel like your being kicked to death by the cast of Riverdance, and drums that march, bound & turn on the head of a platinum pin. CECILE CORBEL (France) with Josh Owen
Tue 11 Mar
Doors 8.00
Singer and composer Cecile Corbel, with her unique harp technique, reveals a world encompassing ancient poems, original compositions, Celtic tunes and Mediterranean melodies. “Imagine a red haired Celt from Brittany (France), with a voice that hovers somewhere between Kate Bush, the purity of Sinead O’Connor and the mysticism of Enya and you'll have a good idea what this remarkable young harpist, arranger of traditional songs and original songwriter sounds like. Corbel belongs to this new generation of European folkies, in the sense that she is happy to take crusty old folk standards and reinvent them for the 21st-century audience…'' (Sydney Morning Herald). ‘Songbook1’ is out now.

Mangan, who ties together the roots of acoustic folk and subtle symphonic pop, has a great appreciation for the power of words and a deep admiration for writers of all kinds. Not one to stay safely inside the singer/songwriter box, he has collaborated with spoken word artist Shane Koyczan, performed alongside acclaimed storyteller Ivan Coyote and DJ Champion. ‘Postcards and Daydreaming’ is out now. Elliott Brood has never been an easy outfit to describe. They’ve been labelled as ‘death country’, ‘bluegrass’, and even ‘urban hillbilly’. After forming in late 2002, the band’s first full length album, ‘Ambassador’, saw them nominated for a Juno in Canada and won them ‘Galaxie Rising Star Award’. WITCH HATS (album launch) with KIM SALMON AND THE SURREALISTS and DIMI DERO (FRANCE)
Sun 23 March 2008 (Easter Public Holiday Eve)
Doors 8.30
Rummaging through the bones of 60’s pop, late 70’s post-punk, 80’s and 90’s noise rock, Melbourne four piece Witch Hats, are the ideal antidote to a world that celebrates the vacuous pursuits of the celebrity classes, cheap corporate rhetoric and the disposable lifestyle. This show will mark the launch of debut album ‘Cellulite Soul’ - a raw, primitive and compelling release, featuring the band’s unique frenzied skree of sex noise, paper cuts to the tongue and electrified, ozone melting howls. Kim Salmon and the Surrealists started so far out they were destined to be pulled into the gravity of a normal orbit the longer they went. Not for them! Thus, they avoid playing. The laws of physics, however, require they make an appearance more than once in a decade! The Surrealists will be selling their very own ‘bootleg’ cd entitled ‘Kneel Down before the Altar of Pop’ from their performance at the NSC back in 2006.
