The identity of the man who medics had failed to revive at Barwon prison ninety minutes earlier hadn’t yet been confirmed, but Carl’s greatest hits were on high rotate; shots of him striding out of court, having been cleared, yet again, of any involvement; shots of him marching into court to deny any and all knowledge; and shots of him squeezed into a pair of orange overalls, momentarily glimpsed as he makes that little shuffle from the side door of the court to the back of a divvy van (you’re nobody in Melbourne crime till you’ve been captured on a long lens making that one-and-a-half second jog). And in all of them, Carl wore the same expression: the puckish smile of The Boy Who Ate All the Pies.
