Jodhi Meares's brother Jason fined, convicted for assaulting police officer he thought was a pimp November 28, 2008 06:02am

BEFORE being found guilty of assaulting a policeman yesterday, the brother of Jodhi Meares said he thought the two undercover officers in the incident were ''a pimp and his prostitute''.

In evidence which bordered on the farcical, lawyers and the judge quizzed Meares's sibling Jason over a slice of pizza he was eating when he clashed with Detective Sergeant Michael Keegan outside strip club Bada Bing in Kings Cross, Sydney.

The plain clothes officer and his partner, who stopped to break up an argument between two business associates of Meares, alleged the mortgage broker interrupted them by yelling ''who the f--- are you'' before ''shoving'' Det-Sgt Keegan.

''His whole demeanour before the push was threatening ... I feared for my safety,'' Det-Sgt Keegan told the Downing Centre Criminal Court.

Meares was arrested and charged over the August 11 melee.

While the prosecution brought in five eye witnesses for the case, including two security guards from the strip club, Meares' barrister referred to the fact his client was eating a slice of pizza at the time to try to show his ''vulnerability'' before putting him in the stand.

Meares, who admitted having ''around six'' beers and initially swearing and pushing the officer, argued the police did not identify themselves.

''I thought they were drug dealers or a guy pimping his prostitute and ... feared for my friends,'' he said.

''I thought I was going into an aggressive situation.''

The financier was found guilty, fined $500 and had a conviction recorded.

His high-profile sister - known for her TV and modelling work as well as her former marriage to James Packer - did not attend the hearing.
