Are Jet about to serve up a 'Shark Sandwich' of their own?

Unlike the mighty Spinal Tap's comeback album ''Shark Sandwich'', which was ''weighted by a disastrous promotion attempt that involved sending shark sandwiches to reviewers'', Aussie rock band Jet have chosen a more tried and tested campaign to spruik their upcoming release ''Shaka Rock''..

FIRST … talk about how craaaaazy everything became once they became mega successful. ''I got caught up doing way too many drugs and hanging out with the wrong people,'' says lead singer Nic Cester. ''We had a few moments where we yelled and screamed at each other, and a few tears and a few hugs.''

SECOND … talk about how this album is all about getting 'back to basics' and ‘rediscovering themselves’. It's all about DIY man... ''We've been guilty of being a bit cocky in the past'', says Nic Cester. ''This time it was just, 'Enough bullshit, let's just start from scratch'. A new beginning… We’re the most comfortable we’ve ever been in our own skin''. And little bro Cester chimes in “And we’re kind of more in control of our destiny. It just sounds like we don’t give a shit and that’s kind of how we are.”

FINALLY … blame all the ''parasites'' and ''leeches'' in the music industry who helped them become rich and famous in the first place.. ‘‘We had to cut the fat away and begin again,’’ Chris Cester says. ‘‘Otherwise, I’m not sure we’d survive. We had all these people hanging around us for the ride and the money. We had to get rid of them.’’ And bass player Mark Wilson adds “It was about getting rid of every arsehole, every person who was attached to us”.

That oughta do it, right?

'Shine On', the follow up to Jet's hugely successful debut 'Get Born' has become better known for being the subject of one of the most memorable music reviews since Spinal Tap's ''Shark Sandwich'' - ''a two word review which simply read… shit sandwich''. Pitchfork Media, a music website known for its pull no punches reviews, chose not to give 'Shine On' a rating at all and instead posted a video of a chimpanzee urinating into its own mouth (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/9464-shine-on).

So is Shaka Rock destined for the same treatment as Shine On? Is it a matter of time before we see another two word review – “shit rock”? No doubt the proof will be in the pudding (or sandwich), however it is interesting to note that there appear to be more than a few similarities between Jet and Spinal Tap than just their album titles. Spinal Tap Comparison # 10 – Monkey See, Monkey Do Spinal Tap aren't an actual band but a group of excellent actors who mimic classic rock bands of the late 60's and 70's. David St Hubbins is a ficticious character played by an American who puts on a fake cockney accent -''We are Spinal Tap from the UK, you must be USA''. Many believe that Jet aren't an actual band but a group of excellent actors who mimic classic rock bands of the late 60's and 70's. Christopher Cester is an Australian living in Hollywood who puts on a fake cockney accent - ''We are the rock band Jet from Melbourne, Australia [well originally, but now living in Italy, UK and USA] and here's our new song called Beat on Repeat [blatant Clash rip-off]''.

Spinal Tap Comparison # 9 - Humble Beginnings Spinal Tap members David St Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel grew up in a little known district on the outskirts of London called Squatney, Nic Cester, his brother Chris and guitarist Cameron Muncey grew up in a little known town on the outskirts of Melbourne called Dingley.

Spinal Tap Comparison # 8 – What’s Wrong with Being Sexy? Spinal Tap were supposedly labelled in the media as being racist, misogynist and sexist (''what's wrong with being sexy?'' - Nigel Tufnel). Jet have been labelled in the media as being 'neanderthal', racist, misogynist and sexist. On Jet’s no.1 single “Cold Hard Bitch” and the topic of 'political correctness' Chris Cester says “It’s just gone so fucking far now. It’s beyond the point of which it was intended to be. It’s just gone to the point of ridiculousness…I’m not talking about denying women’s rights or anything.”

Spinal Tap Comparison # 7- Trouble with Record Label According to the official Spinal Tap biography, trouble began with the band just prior to the release of 'Shark Sandwich' when the group sued its record label, Megaphone, for back royalties, but the label counter-sued, claiming they had a ''lack of talent.'' The band reluctantly stayed with this label until 1977, when their latest release became a surprise hit in the United States due to the hit single ''Nice n' Stinky..'' They quickly signed with Polymer Records.

Jet on the other hand had a multi-album deal with Atlantic Records but it appears the ''lack of talent'' card was used here too when they were dropped from the roster after delivery of 'Shaka Rock' - Atlantic refused to release it. They quickly formed their own label and signed themselves.

Spinal Tap Comparison # 6 - ''None More Black'' In reference to Spinal Tap's 'Smell The Glove' album, Nigel Tufnel said “there’s something about this that’s so black, it’s like how much more black could this be? And the answer is none, none more black.” Talking about Jet’s second album, Chris Cester said “Shine On was a dark album, I mean the cover is black”.

Spinal Tap Comparison #5 – Group Hug After the Megaphone Records disaster, Tap re-grouped at Nigel Tufnel's castle in Lichtenstein. After the Shine On disaster, Jet members (now residing in four different countries) regrouped at Nic Cester's chateau in Como, Italy.

Spinal Tap Comparison #3 – Touring Downscaled Spinal Tap's tour got off to a bad start when some of their biggest gigs were cancelled, and they were forced to play in much smaller venues, eventually opening for a puppet show. Jet's current European tour includes such hotspots as St Polten, Oberhausen, and Weidbaden, whereas a recent show at the Hard Rock Café in London advertised “free mini-burgers”.
