If I understand right, though, the thing that I can buy for $39 is an ''upgrade'', which gets added on to an existing install of Leopard (http://store.apple.com/au/product/MAC_OS_X_SNGL). Does that mean that if something goes wrong and I need to completely reinstall the OS, I'll still need to find original Leopard disks?

If it doesn't mean that (ie, if I can do everything I need to from the Snow Leopard disk), then yes, I'd definitely do what you suggested. Otherwise, I'd prefer to go with the cheap and available Tiger disks - assuming they work with the computer. . .

A secondhand ''Apple iMac Intel 17'' 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo'' that I want comes with Snow Leopard installed, but no install disks. If I buy some grey ''Mac OSX 10.4.8 Install Disks'' that I saw on Ebay, will they work? I understand that it won't be the most up-to-date operating system (apple help patiently explained this to me), but will it run?
