Bleddyn Butcher On The Triffids: Part 2

Comment I Made 3 days ago

Did anyone else see that tour with the Dirty Three that's mentioned? I saw the show at the Metro in Syndey, but had yet to get into the Triffids at the time so don't remember too much of David's set. In fact I'm not sure that I even knew who he was, it may have been only later after getting the Triffids records that I realised. I think perhaps Mick Harvey played organ with the Dirty Three too.

Shows in Adelaide

A bit quiet at the moment, the calm before everything goes nuts at festival time. Maybe a bit late now, but usually the Grace Emily is the place to be on a Monday, not much else happens on Monday nights. Don't know anything much for the rest of the week until Laneway. Probably everyone's having a rest after Lost City. I should include the obligatory mention of a DJ set at Two Ships - I'm there on Thursday.

Every song by LBGP was great.

Pin Group was an early band with Roy Montgomery. Ambivalence is a great track. Always wondered if they were named after the Pin Group in mathematics (obscure geometry reference) or it's a coincidence.

I travel to Melbourne for gigs fairly regularly, this time I was already heading over for the Underground Lovers so I just had to extend my stay by a night. Not flying though.

Bailterspace

There's a best of compilation that's easily available. Some of the others might start coming back, now that Flying Nun have reverted to their original owner they seemed to have switched back from just keeping best of comps in print to bringing back original albums, though I've not heard anything specific about Bailterspace. Alternatively try Slow Boat records in Wellington, they sell loads of OOP NZ stuff online. The best of is fine for an intro anyway though.

There's just always more flying nun stuff to find, recent faves include Goblin Mix, Exploding Budgies, Bilders, Dead Famous People, Fetus Productions, Sneaky Feelings and most of all The Verlaines who I somehow missed until recently.

Bressa Creeting Cakes ''chip'' song is hilarious, though I think Rocky Mountain is probably their finest.

As for Look Blue Go Purple ... anyone who likes some 80's FN and doesn't know them should get the cd with their complete discography right away.

Apparently Peter is to appear in the Arrested Development film, and is also working with Mitch Hurwitz on a Brian Butterfield movie!
