A lot of great things start out crappy. If you want to use the Chaser as an example, that's pretty reasonable actually. It certainly peaked two years ago (and then ended crappy as well, but that's OK). The serious-comedy aspect of HB reminds me of the first episode of the Mavis Bramston Show which I once watched at the National Library. It was comedy veering between vaudeville and hot early 60s satire but at a certain point the cast read Kath Walker poems to images of Aboriginal poverty and suffering. It was out of place, but meant to be, and it wasn't insensitive to then return to pie-in-the-face because it's all part of life's rich (and disturbing) tapestry.

I think it's getting better. It could only have got better from the first episode. It is.
