The show went fk'n excellently, not a dud performance, good vibes, etc.

Great Debate #3: Are Cassettes Here To Stay?

Comment I Made 18 days ago

everyone has a CD player, and it's easy to get access to a CD burner. In contrast cassettes are thoroughly elitist, difficult to manufacture, and can't be played by everybody.

INCORRECT.

Why move backwards?

By your flawed logic of music as progression, all bands should should be working towards a utopia filled with math-rock solos and releases on blu-ray. Sounds like fk'n hell. Thankfully that is not the way that music works; now more than ever it is informed by it's own history, even in it's present form.

It may be an admirable gesture on the part of the artist to distribute their work in a cheap, funky and collectable way, but there is always the implication that the work itself doesn't deserve the care and attention that a vinyl album or CD does.

cheap, funky and collectable? You are seriously sounding like a daggy dad trying to understand what his kids are doing, man.

No one is disputing this. It's the format, not the content, of cassette releases that I was criticising. MalikVerlag makes a good point about this, but one person's ''rare and private'' vision is another's deliberate obscurantism, I guess.

I've defended tapes as a format before, it's a tired argument. If someone is not going to see what's sitting in front of them, there's no point trying to convince them. I think it is interesting to consider why the content of, especially underground Australian, cassettes is of a relatively high standard. Why is so much great music released on tapes? Because they are an excellent / inexpensive / tactile medium that allows underground musicians (i.e. the people doing the most interesting shit) to release their music in an accessible way. The content speaks for the format.

If you doubt cassettes as medium you should get a grip, get off the internet and do something yourself. There are a ton of great labels (aside from those cited) who are releasing some of the most interesting stuff being produced at the moment in Australia or any where else. For a good starting point, see Spanish Magic.

That is probably my fault, I put the line-up on the net before it was finalised. Kyle's in there, he normally goes under FTRG now anyway. Guess it's cool it's on there.

I reckon we should be right on the day with transport, Skelton. Cheers anyway mate. If you wanna play through amps, you'll have to bring 'em in the bongo bus. I think Nik is bringing his bass beast for his set, but otherwise there will be only a PA available.
