he's actually the complete opposite of that in person, lawson. it's not posturing or false modesty. his indecision stems from, as flukazoid said, a desire to keep bettering himself.

I might have been a bit over the top and hasty then. Perhaps the issue is more one of selective quotation and framing from the music press.

De Backer is such a pessimistic sad sack, he's been peddling bitterness like this in the press ever since The Basics' aptly lukewarm reception. An over-inflated sense of artistic importance and continual bitterness is a terrible combination.
