too much reverence in Melbourne, by Melbourne bands for its self...
nicko, I lived sixteen years in Athens, GA, where I wrote about music. I found the music scene to be quite infatuated with the emperor's new clothes. Perhaps that's also how you feel about Melbourne, but after spending two months in Melbourne over 2009-2010, I have to say that I was quite knocked out by how solid so much of the music is. I was pleasantly surprised by how musically literate folks were. My only criticism is that the best bands don't always score local popularity, that hipster caché sometimes matters more than the substance of the music, but those are the thorns in any music scene. Despite that, I assure you, Melbourne really does have something very special going on.

Hey Slugguts, as Music Victoria continues documenting the billions of dollars that the music industry contributes to the Australian economy, some savvy publisher will want a piece of that. Keep hawking your book.

These zines are like analog podcasts.... So few of the zines back then are cataloged in any way. This is an incredible resource. Absolute gold.

Here's an interview I did with Steve Lucas before X's US tour. He liked it enough to post the link twice on Facebook, so maybe it's about time I shared it with you folks.

I just got back from Austin. Oh, do they ever love the Aussies!
if you can get a room, stay at the Austin Motel, the famous cock and balls. just south of the river and across from the Continental Club, walking distance to good coffee (Joe's), shops, food... but it books up fast. another suggestion - next door is Hotel San Jose, a step up from their kitschy neighbor.
E Cesar Chavez shouldn't be too bad. it's got a bad rep but is rapidly gentrifying. Check out Domy Books, Progress Coffee, Rio Rita's - especially on Tues nights when Tim Kerr does his old timey night there...
have fun!

first time I snuck into a rock n roll club, it was to see Alex Chilton... a fern bar in Rockford, Illinois, home of Cheap Trick... Eleventh Dream Day opened. It was the night before Easter, and he played Jesus Christ and a bunch of other Big Star tunes he'd rarely touch. It was power pop heaven.
such a huge slice of my youth was defined by riding around southern Wisconsin in my best friend's Dodge Dart, smoking weed, singing along to September Gurls.
