I remember hearing a J-Files on Polly Jean many years ago. a female caller said something along the lines of 'I cant believe how many males are calling up and are into her music'. Kingsmill rightfully pulled her into line. it doesnt matter what side of the divide yr coming from, basing someones music on their gender is dumb, dumb, dumb. why is it with PJ its a particular issue? there seems to be this idea that certain female artists like Tori amos, Joni Mitchell and Sinead o connor is 'chick' music. Joni is hardcore cool, does what she wants, and thats why i like her. PJ is both brutal and charming, enigmatic and subversive. she is a true original. thats all that matters to me. gender has never been an issue with music i like.

my fave gig there was Deloris and Okkerville River, in about 2005.... definitely end of an era.

a band truly inspired by Dada wouldn't be making rock music in the 21st century, and they surely wouldn't be using the term 'Dada' as a concept. they'd become terrorists or pedophiles or something. but anyhow, can't wait for the Sartre/Situationist inspired record to come.....

i think the reason why Gareth Liddiard is respected is coz

he's writing songs based on good lyrics, rather than having the emphasis on melody. almost every dickhead seems to think they have to write for a commercial audience, and thats why you have so much meaningless music with 'hooks' that are intended to 'resonate' with the target audience. problem is, you can have a good, nice, proper melody, but if it isnt saying anything interesting then it tends to blow pretty harshly. cue - Washington. Gareth is the antidote to all this commercial minded bullshit. 3 minutes for radio format? fuck you, he goes. then he goes, well, fuck melody too. then he chooses to forgo the chance to lushen the harsh songs with arrangements (which most fuckin morons think they have to do these days). he leaves the fucking words and chords as they are.

ET you seem confused. you bag Washington for being too pop, yet you bag Liddiard for not being pop enough. what the fuck is it then?

but at least Everett has a go. fucking good on him.
