Great Debate #2: Triple J Unearthed Radio

Comment I Made 27 days ago

Triple J has always had a feverish obsession with being the first to 'discover' bands. All well and good, but the down side to this is that for every new song added to their playlist (and I believe a handful are added each week), an older song from the playlist has to drop down to 'light rotation'. I am of the opinion that over the years the quality of programming has dropped, and I attribute it to the attempt to keep up with what's new, rather than what's good.

Obviously Unearthed's role is to be a forum for bands to showcase their wares, a database for presenters to scour, and a stepping stone to getting airplay on Daddy J. But I'm hoping that J junior will perhaps relieve some of the pressure on the main station's playlist, by filtering out much of the music that is a bit borderline in quality. Perhaps fewer songs will be playlisted each week, and the songs could have a longer run of airtime.

If the main station stops being obsessed with what's new, I might even tune back in sometimes.

People who use the word SMASH in stupid contexts.

''I'll meet you after I smash some breakfast'' ''I'll just smash this drink and then we'll go'' etc.

EG is an acronym for ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE. Or it was anyway.

EP sales

Nope. Gotta be discrete. But I can rephrase.

Who out there has a band that has released an EP recently? How many units did you sell? Did you tour it relentlessly? Did you get much radio play? Did you pump much money in publicity?

Thanks Mess + Noise. You've been a great help.

EP sales

I'm working on an EP for a local band who have offered me a choice of two different deals for my work. Both deals are a combination of flat fee + percentage of earnings.

I estimate that if band sells less than 700 units (physical or digital) deal A is better, but if they sell more than 700 units deal B is better.

What calibre of band sells 700 units of an EP these days? Obviously publicity and radio play go a long way, but is 700 an easily achieved target? Or does a band have to be doing quite well to sell that many?

The gig started out pretty rough, both in playing and in sound (Dream it Down was particularly loose), but towards the end of the set things improved.

Wasn't entirely sure if all of Emma Bortignon's contributions were entirely necessary, but some were really great.

Would have liked more representation from Rushall in the set, and I was a bit disappointed at the omission of Beautiful World. But Las Vegas was outstanding.

Solid show, but not a patch on the East Brunswick Club show in early 2010.
