It began as a multi-media project in 2002, became a duo and will now involve a six-piece band when gigging. It is Mist & Sea, the just announced new album from former Underground Lovers’ frontman Vince Giarrusso and Pretty Boy Crossover’s Jason Sweeney and Cailan Burns. The debut album from the outfit, Unless, will be released on July 23 through Popfrenzy, and is described as a collection of band compositions, experimental interludes and electro-pop songs.
Given that Giarrusso has spent much of this decade working in the film industry (he wrote and directed the well-received 2001 feature Mallboy), it’s not surprising that the music has a cinematic quality at points, with shoegazer and New Order proving to be other reference points. Rehearsals have begun for live shows, with the core trio already at work on writing the second Mist & Sea album.
