One of last year’s biggest word-of-mouth success stories, Melbourne songwriter Courtney Barnett will release her Double EP in the US through New York label Mom + Pop, home to Sleigh Bells, Andrew Bird, Polica and fellow Aussies Flume and Jagwar Ma. She’ll also play Coachella in April alongside many other Aussies.
Out April 15 in North America, The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas came out digitally last October through London label Marathon Artists. Mom + Pop has licensed the record from Marathon for North America. True to its title, it combines two EPs released in Australia through Barnett’s own Milk! label: 2012’s I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris and 2013’s How to Carve a Carrot into a Rose. The latter came in at #14 on last year’s M+N Readers Poll.
Despite not even releasing a proper album yet, Barnett has already been acclaimed by the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and NPR in the US. And not just there; we named last year’s single ‘Avant Gardener’ the third-best song of 2013, while none other than NME named it sixth-best, ranking the double EP at #38 on its Best Albums list.
The Mom + Pop deal follows much attention around Barnett’s US visit for New York’s CMJ Music Marathon late last year, as documented by Adam Curley. Barnett is touring the States this month, playing cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. All her East Coast dates are sold out. Besides Coachella in April, she’s also slated to play the Firefly, Sasquatch and NXNE festivals.
In an exclusive interview with Billboard, Barnett said: “I’m very hands-on with my music – I do all the artwork and everything myself – and the songs I write aren’t necessarily the most commercial ... It was important to me to work with a label that was OK with that and with keeping the creative channels open.” Mom + Pop founder Michael “Goldie” Goldstone, meanwhile, praised Barnett’s “non-traditional approach to writing that connects as visceral and immediate.”
North American fans can pre-order The Double EP now, included a limited-edition tea towel featuring a Barnett illustration. The record is already available digitally on iTunes. She shared the EP track ‘Anonymous Club’ today in the US; stream it below. The Double EP will be released in Australia sometime in March through Milk!/Remote Control.
