Release The Bats: ATP Does Halloween

News posted Tuesday, March 19 2013 at 09:00 PM.
Related: ATP, The Scientists, Release The Bats, The Breeders, The Jesus Lizard.

It took four years for All Tomorrow’s Parties to make its return to Australia, but following the success of the two day “I’ll Be Your Mirror” event in February, the festival has announced it’ll be back in Melbourne this October for a special Halloween party.

Headlined by The Breeders celebrating the 20th anniversary of Last Splash by playing the album in full, Release the Bats will also feature The Jesus Lizard on their first visit to Australia since 1996, Australian punk icons The Scientists, noise rock duo Lightning Bolt, stoner doom-metal heroes Sleep and Fuck Buttons. The final lineup is expected to feature around 14 acts.

ATP will once again be taking over the Westgate Entertainment Centre and Grand Star Receptions complex in Altona in Melbourne’s inner-west for the party. Like the event last month, there’ll be two stages, a cinema, art exhibition, a food court and nude artist “Pricasso” painting special Halloween portraits in his own inimitable style.

To encourage fans to dress up, ATP will be offering prizes for the best costumes, suggesting that punters should take inspiration from one of the bands playing, or their album artwork. While Halloween isn’t really an Australian tradition, ATP founder Barry Hogan told M+N sister site FL he expects to see the bands and fans dressed up. “Goths dressed up walking around Altona listening to Jesus Lizard,” he laughed. “On paper it might look kind of crazy but it works.” We can’t wait to find ourselves in Altona surrounded by strange men dressed as reptilian gods, lightning bolts and fucked buttons.

It’ll all kick off at midday on Saturday, October 26, with tickets limited to just 5000 well-dressed punters. The party will run until 1am (although the headliners will finish by 11pm, so don’t worry too much about being stranded in Altona.) Tickets are $150 (+ booking fee) and go on sale March 20 from ATP’s website.

The full interview with Barry Hogan, which includes his plans for further ATP events in Australia, will be published on FL tomorrow. Full first-round line-up below.

Well, no one saw that one coming, least not so soon. I'll hold off till it sells out, sideshows are announced, Fear of Altona sets in and people start offloading tickets at half price. Its a gamble but what are the odds (aka this is good news) ...

Woohoo! Atp makes me want to actually check my email regularly if shit is finally happening in oz. Otherwise I would have known already.

NiteShok  said about 2 months ago:

This is a surprisingly quick turnaround! I like it.

MelonHCST  said about 2 months ago:

I remember Jesus Lizard and Lightning Bolt being on The Drones' wish list, any others?

mrmagoo  said about 2 months ago:

gonna wait til there is a dump of half price tickets closer to the show

good to see they are using moshtix as well for tickets, $156.60

birdslovefighting  said about 2 months ago:

Better time of the year, it'll be much cooler (temperature wise).

Velodrone  said about 2 months ago:

I might have a pregnant wife.

Here's hoping The Jesus Lizard play side shows in other states (cough-Adelaide-cough).

JunkiePhil  said about 2 months ago:

Not going to fall for this 'Only Victorian Show' shit again.
Last Splash is my least fave record of The Breeders.
See you at their side show.

kingkong  said about 2 months ago:

SLEEP!

Please tell me HAIKUS will be drumming???!

firewitch  said about 2 months ago:

Hakius does not play for them. Very disappointing. Yeah fuck this only Vic show crap. Paying $150 to see Jesus Lizard on that massive stage can get fucked

JunkiePhil  said about 2 months ago:

I'll lick the egg from my face, but being that I ended up paying $150 to see MBV's ''Only'' vic show and then another $80 to see their other 'ONLY'' vic show....Not going to fall for that again.

Jason Roeder plays drums for Sleep - hardly disappointing

I think it was MBVs promoter that decided to to another vic show after telling ATP they'd be an exclusive. If it's a different promoter, it might stick this time. Also, I doubt there's nearly as high demand for these bands to do a sideshow as there was for MBV.

Forest Swords. hells yes.

The Jesus Lizard?

this line up would be amazing for fans of all those bands. stupid observation of the day.

I just reckon Hakius is very individual and they basically wrote dopesmoker around his drumming. Not the kind of dude you can just replace

Reading through the FL interview with Barry, the last few acts will be internationals. The Locust pleeeeeeeeeeease.

Sly little dig at Harvest as well. I expect AJ to start a war any minute now.

I would think that there will have to be a sideshow for The Breeders, based on demand. At the time (1994), I think it was the highest selling album ever released on an independent label (more than ''Bleach'' or ''Pills Thrills'').

Dr Wiki says; ''Last Splash peaked at #33 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart. By June 1994, the album was certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipment in excess of one million units.''

Interview link? Be surprised if there were any more internationals announced. Though The Locust would fit in pretty nicely!

Dunno if that will work. Only basing The Locust hope on the fact they got added to the YYY's one

dzerzhanzhinskii  said about 1 month ago:

a no-brainer for me. local too (but very international).

and there's my hallowe'en costume sorted as well.

mrmagoo  said about 1 month ago:

i wonder how this one is selling? been very quiet around these parts

flukazoid  said about 1 month ago:

Was wondering that just last night. I'm sorta tempted, but not on the same level that I was with ATP/Drones

mrmagoo  said about 1 month ago:

i'm holding out for the last minute half price ticket dump

slothman  said about 1 month ago:

easily the first ATP AUS line-up that has got me salivating right out of the gates, but my funds and accomodation are concerns. i also can't vouch for my availability that day/night. would love to know how it's selling to see if i can get a ticket closer to the day. maybe it'll be like the last one and people will be dropping un-needed tickets on the street.

Jesus Lizard, Television, PiL, Modern Lovers, Lightning Bolt, Toumani Diabate, Jesus and Mary Chain, Low, Butthole Surfers, Latin Playboys, OFF!, Marc Ribot, Guy Clarke, Fugazi

mrmagoo  said about 1 month ago:

FUGAZI!!!

astrousersasmind  said about 1 month ago:

well that would be awesome.

LeRayonVert  said about 1 month ago:

I can't see Modern Lovers happening, but they should totally get Jonathan Richman, saw him in the US last year and he was amazing.

carwashhair  said about 1 month ago:

Richman isn't scary enough for Halloween, he's probably more in tune with ATP - My Funny Valentine, 15 -16 Feb 2014.

illywhacker  said about 1 month ago:

That's me sold.

bungle  said about 1 month ago:

For my money this is just about the best aussie festival lineup I've ever seen.

tihstar  said about 1 month ago:

This sold out yet? If not I'm in... I'll be back in the country then and can't miss one of my favourite albums ever being played in full.

illywhacker  said about 1 month ago:

Haven't heard anything to say it's sold out. I bought a ticket a couple of hours ago.

mrmagoo  said about 1 month ago:

far from sold out

tihstar  said about 1 month ago:
