A consuming song “about sleepless nights and midnight adventures,” ‘Start’ opens Lunars’ self-titled debut EP. Self-produced by songwriter/mainstay Andrew K, it’s the first of three EPs from the Melbourne act this year, following 2012’s single ‘Headlight’. ‘Start’ dives into Lunars’ heady dream-rock straightaway with phosphorescent keyboards, crashing cymbals and other generous layers.
The cover art for the name-your-price EP comes from Rosevich, who’s creating art for each of the year’s planned Lunars EPs. Recorded in various homes and lounge rooms around town, this first EP is self-described as “a record of nocturnal melodies and twisted pop, inspired by Lunars’ love of sweet harmonies, noise and ’80s punk.” After ‘Start’, it descends into heavier and darker reaches without losing that sticky sweetness.
The band’s next gig is Friday, March 1 at Dane Certificate's Magic Tricks, Gags & Theatre in Brunswick.
