Melbourne quartet Deep Heat are always sure to shoot sparks with their weaving guitar interplay and amped-up momentum, but their latest offering summons Chuck Berry-era rock ‘n’ roll just as much as punk or post-punk. It’s a pop-driven act of devotion to the guitar, building wobbly tension and saving the would-be chorus for the end: “Are we moving faster?/Are we under control?”
‘New Design’ is the title track from the band’s New Design EP, out March 11 through Poison City on 10” vinyl. It follows last year’s Low Lights EP and was recorded while touring the US by Steve Roche (Off Minor, Saetia) at Philadelphia’s Permanent Hearing Damage Studio. Says the presser: “Deep Heat trade the energy and melody of early Wipers with the angsty ardour of mid-’90s bands, creating an urgent wiring of raging post-punk, garage and dark indie rock.”
The five-song EP can be pre-ordered from Poison City. Catch them live too, while you're at it.
